Estimating household consumption insurance

چکیده

Blundell, Pistaferri, and Preston (American Economic Review, 2008, 98(5), 1887–1921) report an estimate of household consumption insurance with respect to permanent income shocks 36%. In replicating findings for their model data, we find that this is distorted by a code error not robust weighting scheme generalized method moments (GMM) or consideration quasi maximum likelihood estimation (QMLE), which produces significantly higher at 55%. For sub‐groups age education, the differences between estimates across methods are even more pronounced, QMLE provides new insights into heterogeneity households compared original study. Monte Carlo experiments using non‐normal suggest accurate than GMM, including when correcting bias especially given smaller sample such as only available looking sub‐groups.

Using micro-level household data in the 2001 Comprehensive Survey of the Living Conditions of the People on Health and Welfare compiled by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, this paper examines how having a household member in need of long-term nursing care can result in welfare losses measured in terms of consumption. In so doing, this study evaluates the role of the public lo...

How Much Consumption Insurance Beyond Self-Insurance?*

We assess the degree of consumption smoothing implicit in a calibrated life-cycle version of the standard incomplete-markets model, and we compare it to the empirical estimates of Blundell et al. (2008) (BPP thereafter). We find that households in the model have access to less consumption smoothing against permanent earnings shocks than what is measured in the data. BPP estimate that 36% of per...

1. There is inconsistent practice and some uncertainty on the terms “editing” and “imputation”. In this document we will refer to data editing as the procedure used to correct or reconcile contradictory information, whereas imputation is the procedure used to deal with missing data. The glossary of the United Nations Statistical and Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) states that data editin...
